Stags led through two Lindon Meikle strikes but SSAFA levelled the game before half-time with two quick-fire goals.
Jake Green put Stags back in front in the second half and the men in amber & blue should have wrapped up the contest comfortably but for a wasteful Simon Murphy, who missed a number of gilt-edged chances.
SSAFA's never-say-die attitude shone through when they grabbed another to take the game to spot kicks, where they won 3-1.
