Young guns win in emphatic style

7 August 2013

Our youngsters began their pre-season campaign in emphatic style tonight as they cruised to a 7-1 victory over Southwell City.

Debutant frontman Travarn Damar-Thomson bagged four goals, including a first half hat-trick, whilst Jack Hawkins netted a brace. Joe Flint was our other scorer.

Our team led after just eight minutes as Damar-Thomson slotted home from close-range, following some fine work by strike-partner Flint.

The Stags dominated throughout and created numerous chances, three of which they took during a sensational six-minute spell prior to half-time.

On 37 minutes, Damar-Thomson doubled our advantage with an intelligent finish from a tight angle, having weaved his way past two players in the area.

Moments later, Hawkins’ exquisite nutmeg and sublime pass put Flint in the clear, who made no mistake with a cool and composed finish.

With Southwell craving the half-time whistle, the impressive Damar-Thomson completed his hat-trick in stunning style, hitting a ferocious 20-yard drive into the top corner.

Mansfield continued to attack with menace after the re-start and Matt Jones and Jordan Jones both went close, whilst Hawkins also hit the post.

Southwell pulled a goal back on the hour-mark, but The Stags finished with a fantastic flourish as they struck on three further occasions late on.

Hawkins, who produced a tireless performance, made it 5-1 after being released by Damar-Thomson, before the same duo combined again for our sixth.

On the cusp of stoppage-time, Jason Gregory’s long ball put Damar-Thomson clean through, whose nonchalant chipped finish added gloss to a superb win.
