Talisman Matt Green is targeting a double success in the coming weeks as he bids to scoop the prestigious ‘Golden Boot’ award and become a Blue Square Bet Premier title winner.
The 26-year-old, who has netted on 23 occasions this term, posted his latest strike in our midweek victory over Macclesfield Town, which moved him to the top of the scoring charts.
“[Twenty goals] is a target that any striker wants to achieve in a season,” said Green.
“It’s a weight off my shoulders now to have done it and in the remaining games I want to get as many as I can. Scoring goals is what makes me happy.
“We’re getting the right results to follow it too, so things are going great. I’ve never felt pressure because the gaffer has said ‘Go out and score some goals’ and I’ve managed to do that.
“Young strikers’ dream of getting the Golden Boot [award] but the most important thing is promotion and if I can get a championship winner’s medal then I will be happy.
“But if I can achieve both [then] it would be a dream come true.
He continued: “Looking back, the Wrexham game was maybe a bit of a blessing in disguise as it made us realise just what a strong position we were in.
“Barrow was tough and [it was good] that it came just two days after [the defeat at] Wrexham, which was still fresh in our minds. I thought we dealt with it professionally.
“It’d be great to get promotion this time around, because all the lads and the staff around the club deserve it – especially after what happened last season.
“These moments are moments to remember,” added our star striker.
Green was also full of praise for team-mate Alan Marriott, whom he believes is easily the best goalkeeper in the top tier of non-league football.
“I don’t think Mazza gets enough plaudits to be honest,” continued our talisman.
“Having played with him for the last few seasons, I can tell you that he is the best goalkeeper in this league and I’ve not got a bad word to say about him.”
