Youth preview: Doncaster Rovers vs Stags

9 September 2021

Stags' under-18s return to action in the EFL Youth Alliance this weekend with a trip to face Doncaster Rovers (11am kick-off).

Mansfield have endured a difficult start to their season, drawing one and losing two of their opening three matches.

They showed good heart against league leaders Rotherham United last time out, going ahead in the game against a Millers' side who were yet to concede at the time.

Striker Jack Deakin was in impressive form, scoring twice in the match via assists from Jakub Kruszynski. Unfortunately for the young Stags, two quickfire goals from the Millers saw them earn a 3-2 victory.

Saturday's hosts, Doncaster, currently occupy fifth place in the league standings, winning two and losing one of their opening three fixtures.

Last time out, they recorded an impressive 3-2 win away to third-placed Scunthorpe United.

The match will kick-off at 11am at the following venue: Cantley Park Training Ground, Ascot Avenue, Cantley, Doncaster, DN4 6HE.

Youth report: Doncaster Rovers 0-4 Stags

13 September 2021

Mansfield Town's under-18s cruised to their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory away at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Curtis Davies, Nathan Caine, Ethan Hill and substitute Oliver Wilson were all on the scoresheet at Cantley Park Training Ground in the EFL Youth Alliance clash.

The Stags made a great start to the game with some free-flowing moves, and were rewarded with a goal inside five minutes.

Darien Wauchope’s long ball forward was well flicked on by Jack Deakin, with Davies profiting from some good centre-forward play.

The midfielder, through on goal, fired the ball into the bottom-left corner to put his side ahead.

Doncaster looked to produce a response from the left-hand side but headed over the crossbar after a good delivery into the area.

Just before half-time, another cross was whipped in with pace, Taylor Anderson’s clearance finding a Doncaster attacker. Fortunately for the visitors, a first-time volley went wide.

The hosts started the second period on the front foot, with a cross from the right causing problems for the Stags’ defence. Anderson was well positioned once more to make a crucial block.

Despite Doncaster’s strong start to the second-half, Mansfield would soon double their lead through Caine. Deakin turned well before sliding a pass through to the Stags’ forward, who finished well into the bottom corner.

And it would not be long until Mansfield had three. Excellent build-up play between Deakin, Jakub Kruszynski and Hill concluded with a chance for the latter, who rounded off the move with a well-aimed strike.

The young guns were not to settle for just three goals, adding to their advantage in the 81st minute.

Anderson crossed from a left-sided free-kick, finding substitute Wilson, who headed home to make it four.

The Stags’ next fixture is against Lincoln City at home on Saturday 18 September.

STAGS' XI: Mason, Anderson (Hill-Smith 82’), Cooper, Collins, Wauchope, Carter, Hill (Kokkinos 82’), Davies (C), Kruszynski (Flanagan 82’), Caine, Deakin (Wilson 72’).
