Youth report: Doncaster Rovers 1-4 Stags

31 March 2021

Stags’ under-18s recorded an emphatic 4-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers in Saturday’s EFL Youth Alliance fixture.

Curtis Davies fired home twice in the first-half, before Max Hurdis added to the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Olly Wilson made it four on 69 minutes, before a Doncaster consolation found the net 15 minutes from time.

Saturday’s hosts saw plenty of the ball in the early exchanges, forcing Owen Mason into a number of saves early on.

Despite the early Doncaster pressure, the Stags opened the scoring inside the opening 20 minutes.

Diego Edwards forced a fine save from the Rovers’ goalkeeper after meeting Kian Sketchley’s cross, but Davies was placed perfectly to profit from the rebound.

Doncaster responded well to conceding in terms of their general play, but found themselves two goals down ten minutes before the break.

Excellent combination play involving Ethan Hill, Jack Deakin and Davies opened up space for the latter, who unleashed a 25-yard strike to double the lead.

Rovers once again produced a stern response to a Mansfield goal, producing their best opportunity of the half on 43 minutes.

A cross whipped in from the right found a Doncaster man, but Mason was well placed to preserve the Stags’ two-goal advantage.

It was a save that proved vital, as the amber and blue extended their lead to three on the stroke of half-time.

Persistent pressing from the Stags forced the Doncaster goalkeeper into a misplaced pass, leaving Hurdis with a simple finish.

As was seen in the first-half, the hosts raced out of the blocks in search of an early goal.

Doncaster looked to make full use of several set piece situations, but the Mansfield defence remained firm

Rovers’ first big chance of the second period came on the hour-mark from a counter-attack down the Mansfield left.

A mazy run from the Doncaster right-back allowed him space at the edge of the area, but Mason was equal to the powerful effort that followed, tipping the ball over the bar for a Rovers’ corner.

Mansfield substitute Wilson then extended the lead to four goals with his first touch of the game.

Jonty Bouch intercepted a pass from the left-hand side, before crossing well to Wilson in the box. Wilson controlled his finish well, hitting the ball first time to beat the Doncaster goalkeeper.

Doncaster added a consolation 15 minutes from time, heading home from a wide free-kick delivery.

The Stags defended well for the remainder of the contest, seeing out a hard-earned 4-1 win away from home.

STAGS' XI: Mason, Tomlin, Hill-Smith, Collins, Sketchley, Bouch, Hill (Carter, 45'), Davies (Krusznski, 77'), Hurdis (Colt, 65'), Edwards (Wilson, 65') & Deakin
