Report: Stags 3-0 Morecambe

12 August 2023

Lucas Akins scored twice as Mansfield Town swept aside Morecambe at One Call Stadium with a 3-0 win.

The forward headed Stags into a first-half stoppage time lead, and after Keillor-Dunn scored just past the hour, Akins fired home from the penalty spot late on as Nigel Clough’s men coasted to victory.

Mansfield recorded 27 shots at goal as opposed to Morecambe’s three; a stat which accurately reflected this one-sided encounter.

Stags again should have scored more, but a combination of wasteful finishing and goo goalkeeping denied Mansfield a greater victory.

Baily Cargill replaced Jordan Bowery at left-back in the only change to the line-up from Tuesday’s excellent 2-0 victory at home to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.

Midfielder George Maris missed out as his partner was taken into labour.

Stags dominated the ball in the opening stages, however it was Morecambe who were presented with the game’s first chance after seven minutes.

Right-back Callum Johnson was unable to effectively clear a cross, but Mansfield were spared as Tom Bloxham volleyed over from ten yards.

It was the Shrimps only opening of the first-half and at the other end, Stags had a double chance in the 14th minute to break the deadlock.

Firstly, midfielder Aaron Lewis delivered from the right to the edge of the goal area, but Davis Keillor-Dunn’s snapshot was blocked by Morecambe’s Jacob Bedeau.

And less than a minute later, Johnson’s pin-point cross from the same flank could only be headed wide by forward Lucas Akins at the back post.

Stags were finding their rhythm and Rhys Oates was next to have a crack from 20 yards, which arrowed narrowly wide of the left post.

Midfielder Louis Reed had a similar effort on 21 minutes which met the same outcome as Mansfield began to push the visitors’ defence back further.

Lewis then lined one up two minutes later, but his 22-yard drive flew high and wide.

Morecambe shot-stopper Stuart Moore was called into action on 24 minutes.

Frontman Rhys Oates kept onside to break forward on the inside left, before rifling a shot at goal which Moore was equal to as he pushed around the post.

On the half-hour mark, Alfie Kilgour saw his crashing drive arrow off target before Akins was presented with a double chance.

Moore made a good stop from Akins’ 15-yard hit and then from the follow-up, the forward struck into the side netting.

Morecambe remained pinned in and around their box and Stags went close again when Aaron Lewis’ 27-yard free-kick was curled behind.

Morecambe’s JJ McKiernan and captain Donald Love were booked within a minute before Stags finally broke the seal with a stoppage time goal.

From just outside the box on the left side, Stephen Quinn clipped a dangerous free-kick into the area and Keillor-Dunn rose well to flick deeper into the goal area, where Akins nodded home from close range.

Inside 90 seconds of the second-half, Akins tried to turn provider by slipping to Oates on the left, but his forward partner lashed over.

On 51 minutes, the tenacious Oates robbed Morecambe of possession before curling over from the left of the box.

Just as Derek Adams’ side began to show some attacking intent, they parted like the red sea at the other end as Stags doubled their lead on 62 minutes

Morecambe gave away the ball casually and Davis Keillor-Dunn was allowed space and time to dart through the middle before planting his shot to the right of the diving Moore.

Stags made a double change as Quinn and Cargill made way for Hiram Boateng and Jordan Bowery.

Oates then produced a top-drawer one-handed stop from Moore, as he got down low at full-stretch to deny the forward’s well-struck effort.

The Stags’ sharp-shooter was determined to find the net and again struck narrowly over from 18 yards after Keillor-Dunn’s lay off.

And on 86 minutes, Oates helped Mansfield to their third goal after being bundled to the ground inside the box.

Akins stepped up right-footed to send the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Stags a third goal after  87 minutes, putting Morecambe well out of sight.

Nigel Clough then made a treble change as Anthony Hartigan, Ollie Clarke and McKeal Abdullah replaced Louis Reed, Aaron Lewis and Rhys Oates.

In stoppage time, Jordan Slew missed a sitter at the back post from a right-wing cross, but by that time the outcome was already beyond doubt.
