Preview: Stags vs Hull City

Mansfield Town welcome Hull City to One Call Stadium on Saturday 20 July for their second pre-season friendly against Championship opposition this week. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the match…

It was revealed by manager John Dempster that midfielder Willem Tomlinson sustained minor knee ligament damage in Wednesday's pre-season friendly against Blackburn, and will therefore be sidelined for approximately four weeks.

The Stags will be without forwards Craig Davies and Jordan Graham for the match, while goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik, a long-term absentee due to an ACL injury suffered last season, will also miss out.

Young defender Noah Stokes will be absent from the squad after dislocating his knee last Thursday during our away match against Bradford Park Avenue.

The Tigers will be without defender Angus MacDonald, who has not featured for Hull in over ten months, after being sidelined with a blood clot in his calf last November.

Last time out, the Stags displayed a spirited performance against Blackburn Rovers, with the visitors winning by a 3-1 scoreline at One Call Stadium on Wednesday evening.

In the two matches that preceded the amber and blue’s match with Rovers, 4-2 and 1-0 victories were earned away at Bradford Park Avenue and Alfreton Town, respectively.

Grant McCann’s Hull have played three games in pre-season to date; a 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient, a 2-1 win over Lincoln Red Imps, and more recently, a convincing 3-0 victory over Grimsby Town.

We last faced the Tigers in a pre-season friendly at One Call Stadium in July 2016. The Stags displayed a battling performance against the then-Premier League side, losing by a narrow 1-0 scoreline on a sweltering summer’s day.

The referee for Saturday’s game will be Michael Salisbury, assisted by Mark Jones and David Plowright. The fourth official will be David Hunt.

Mr. Salisbury took charge of our play-off semi-final second leg clash against Newport County in May.

Tickets for the match are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions (under-18 and 65+), and can be purchased at no further price increase up until kick-off on matchday.

Tickets for the match are available to purchase online via stagstickets.co.uk, at the ticket office on Quarry Lane, or by calling the office on 01623 482 482.

Please note that tickets for our friendly against Hull are only available in the upper and lower tiers of the Ian Greaves Stand.

The newly-refurbished Sandy’s Bar & Kitchen will open at 9am, serving all-you-can-eat breakfast for just £4.75 until 11am.

Following this, the bar will not serve food from its main menu, but a selection of matchday food will be available from 12pm.

The bar will begin to serve food from its main menu after the full-time whistle.

Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available for both home and away supporters, and the bar is located at the rear of the Ian Greaves Stand.

The bar will remain open until 11pm after the match.

Supporters should note that the Kevin Bird Suite will not be open for Saturday’s friendly.

Supporters will also be able to purchase the special poster edition of our new-look matchday programme The Stag for just £1.50 prior to all of our home pre-season friendlies.

On one side of the fold-out poster our fixtures for the 2019-20 season are listed, with notes from manager John Dempster and chairman John Radford overleaf, along with opposition content on Blackburn Rovers, Hull City and Nottingham Forest.

The Stag can be purchased from the merchandise stand near Sandy’s Bar & Kitchen, our matchday kiosks, or any mobile programme vendor around One Call Stadium.

Car parking is severely restricted at One Call Stadium and works on a first come, first served basis. All reserved car parking spaces are within the location of the Ian Greaves Stand car park.

Matchday parking costs £5 per car. Please note that the car park shuts 30 minutes prior to kick-off due to safety regulations.

The following sites, owned by Mansfield District Council and with easy access to One Call Stadium are Grove Street, Victoria Street, Garden Road and Church Lane.

All of the above pay and display surface level car parks offer cashless parking via RingGo as an additional way to pay.

Every car park has a unique code so people can either pay over the phone, by text, online or by using a free smartphone app.

Where do I go when I get to One Call Stadium?

Hospitality

If you are a hospitality guest, please enter the stadium via the brown double doors to the rear of the Ian Greaves Stand, which is the entrance to our hospitality suites.

The doors are located to the left of the white merchandise stall outside Sandy’s Bar & Kitchen, backing onto the main car park and sign-posted 'The Kevin Bird Suite'.

Media

Members of the media are asked to also head to the entrance to our hospitality suites, where our media steward will provide you with the necessary accreditation.

Supporters

If you need to collect tickets, please head to the main ticket office on Quarry Lane. For ticket purchases, please visit the matchday ticket office, adjacent to the Quarry Lane Stand, around the corner from the main ticket office.

The Ian Greaves Stand is the main stand at One Call Stadium, which backs onto the main car park.

Away supporters are housed in the North Stand, which can be accessed via Portland Retail Park. Please note: there is no matchday parking at the retail park.

Report: Stags 2-2 Hull City

Neal Bishop and CJ Hamilton were on target for Mansfield Town as they played out a battling 2-2 draw against Sky Bet Championship side Hull City.

There were solitary goals in either half for both sides as Jarrod Bowen’s opener was cancelled out by a calm strike by Bishop.

And while the visitors were ahead 12 seconds into the second period via Nouha Dicko, again the Stags responded through Hamilton’s angled finish.

John Dempster named a strong starting XI for the Tigers’ visit to One Call Stadium but was without Jacob Mellis who missed out due to illness.

There was an open feel to Saturday’s contest and both sides had early chances to force themselves into the driving seat with their respective attacking summer acquisitions.

Tom Eaves lashed a half-volley into the side netting before Andy Cook had his attempt blocked in timely manner.

Bowen, the Tigers’ top scorer last campaign, then almost found the net once more had it not been for a floated effort that connected with the woodwork.

City were next to threaten through Eaves once more – this time a back-post header falling wide of the mark.

But it proved to be third time lucky for Grant McCann’s side, in the 27th minute.

Kamil Grosicki wheeled towards the by-line where a smart cutback presented Bowen the simple task of stroking the ball home.

Mansfield would not be deterred, however, as Otis Khan’s delivery that looked to be looping inside the post had to be touched behind for a corner.

A slick, one-touch move from the hosts also ended with the midfielder striking into the legs of George Long.

Soon after, as Hamilton sought to race clear, he was cynically pulled down to prevent an inevitable one-on-one scenario.

This, though, would not stop the Stags restoring parity one minute from the interval.

Khan’s wicked free-kick crashed against Long’s bar and found its way into the path of the oncoming Bishop who had the majority of the goal as a target.

A clean, thumping strike ensured proceedings were level at the interval.

However, within a minute of the restart the away side had their lead back.

Dicko was able to profit from a defensive error as he rounded Conrad Logan and tucked the ball away.

Dempster’s men continued to exhibit their never-say-die attitude following City’s second of the afternoon – and it paid off once more.

On 54 minutes, Khan worked the ball wide to Hamilton who, as he so often does, found the far corner from a tight angle.

With the scores all-tied yet again the Stags’ latest pre-season test continued to ebb and flow.

Bowen tried a curling effort that fell into the midriff of Logan before Cook’s low drive was expertly thwarted by Long.

Minutes later, Mansfield’s number 19 was presented with another chance but was unable to connect cleanly with the ball due to pressure from his marker.

Omari Sterling-James then lined up an audacious, first-time effort from 30 yards but the midfielder could only direct it wide.

The Stags continued their pressure via Khan who forced a smart save from Long following a mazy run.

At the other end, Logan was also in action as his sprawling save denied Jordy de Wijs’ header from creeping under the crossbar.

Ryan Tafazolli – formerly a Stag – was introduced by McCann for the final few moments and he was met by a warm ovation from the home faithful.

The contest ended all-square as another good run out for Dempster’s side reared many positive aspects.

Mansfield’s pre-season schedule bids them against Nottingham Forest’s U23s at One Call Stadium this Tuesday evening.
