Stags Fans United

Posted on: Mon 11 Oct 2010
Stags Fans United is the Mansfield Town Supporters Trust. It was originally known as Team Mansfield but changed its name to Stags Fans United in December 2008.

The Supporters Trust was formed in August 1999 following a public meeting at Mansfield Civic Centre. The Supporters Trust approached Keith Haslam in January 2000 and made a significant offer for his majority shareholding. This offer was rejected as Keith Haslam stated that he did not want to sell his shares and had no intention of leaving Field Mill in the foreseeable future.

The Supporters Trust still felt that it was worthwhile acquiring shares in Mansfield Town so that the supporters could be part owners of the football club. In October 2000 a second public meeting was held, with Keith Haslam present. It was announced that Keith Haslam was prepared to sell a minority shareholding in the football club to the Supporters Trust and that a community agreement would be signed giving the fans certain rights and responsibilities. A postal ballot of the Trust's members gave the proposal over 98% backing.

Regular meetings between Keith Haslam and fans representatives started in February 2001 (called Community Consultation Meetings - CCT's) and a significant thawing of relations between the Chairman and the fans started. By April 2001 over £33,000 had been raised by fan donations. At this stage, the Supporters Trust converted to an Industrial and Provident Society (IPS) and the serious work of drafting and implementing a legal agreement between Mansfield Town and its fans began.

After the purchase of the football club by three local businessmen (Andrew Perry, Andrew Saunders and Steve Middleton) in July 2008, the Supporters Trust has worked much more closely with the football club and on 12th September 2009 signed an agreement with the owners to purchase a further 8% of shares in the club for £55,000. This money was raised in just over 14 months with donations from fans and the various fans groups including £15,000 from the SSA.

The agreement also created the first ever role at the football club for a supporter director. At the Supporters Trust EGM ratifying the purchase of the shares, it was agreed that Colin Dobell would become the first supporter director. Colin has been a key member of the Supporters Trust and brings a huge amount of business experience to his work with the other directors.

The Supporters Trust continues to fund raise through social events and other sources in order to put further monies into the football club. The next aim is to raise a further £12,000 to buy the remaining 1,200 Community Shares. Once the Supporters Trust has raised the next £12,000, it will continue to seek new members and new funding streams to develop their fund to support the club.

The Supporters Trust is registered with Supporters Direct, the body set up to advise sports trusts and Stags Fans United will always be grateful for the support of Kevin Rye, SD Communications Manager, who has attended countless meetings and has been a constant source of support. Stags Fans United would recommend any Supporters Trust to work closely with Supporters Direct.

If any Stags fan would like to make a donation to help the Supporters Trust then they should send a cheque to Stags Fans United, 4 Yew Tree Close, Gamston, Retford, Notts, DN22 0PZ. Cheques should be made payable to "Stags Fans United Society Limited.
