Manager David Holdsworth fought off massive competition to sign the talented midfielder in November 2009. Burgess, who can play in both central midfield and on either wing joined on an initial one month loan, to be extended in January 2010 to an 18 month contract.

The 28-year-old joined the Stags from promotion rivals Luton Town, a team he only signed for in the summer of 2009. After suffering an injury at the start of the current campaign, Burgess found his first team chances limited at the Hatters, making only ten appearances.

The experienced midfielder has spent the majority of his ten year professional career at Rushden & Diamonds. During two spells at Nene Park he made a total of 286 appearances, scoring 29 goals in the process.

Andy began his career with Rushden in 1999 after progressing through the youth ranks. He was a regular in the 2000/1 side that gained promotion to the Football League, starting 37 times.

He subsequently helped Diamonds gain back-to-back promotions, as they secured passage from what was then termed Division Three. The 6' 3'' player unfortunately missed the opportunity to star in the play off final through injury.

In 2006, after playing in over 200 matches for the Diamonds, Andy finally moved on as he joined Oxford United. He made 55 appearances for the U's, however, one year after leaving, he returned to Nene Park in 2007.

Burgess again enjoyed success with the club as the 2007/8 season saw him receive several accolades, including the fans' player of the season award. In his last campaign with the club, the talented midfielder was rewarded with the captaincy. He featured 40 times before a summer move to his boyhood team Luton Town materialised.
