Young guns out of the Cup
Stags' youth team were sent tumbling out of the FA Youth Cup after a 4-1 defeat at home to a strong Carlisle United side.
After an evenly-matched first 20 minutes, the visitors bagged two goals in the first half, but in truth, it could have been more..
United's chief tormenter Andy Cook grabbed his first of three on 25 minutes. Stags' defender Eddy West weakly headed back to goalkeeper Luke Gibbons, and Cook was on hand to round the keeper and break the deadlock.
Cook grabbed his second on the stroke of half time after a superb defence-splitting pass from midfielder Stephen Hindmarch. Cook latched on to the ball through the middle and finished with aplomb to double United's lead.
Shortly after the break, Stags showed much more verve and penetration in attack, and they got their reward only four minutes in. Captain Warren Burrell fired a shot goalwards from 22 yards, which defelected off a United defender and flew past keeper Alex Mitchell to reduce the deficit.
Just under ten minutes later, a long throw on the left hand side by Matthew Brown found Cook in the centre, who neatly played the ball to Gary Madie to thunder a shot past Gibbons to restore United's two goal advantage.
Midway inside the second period, Cook secured his hat trick and completed Carlisle's victory. The number 10 smashed home a shot after a fine cross in from the right.
Final score: Stags 1-4 Carlisle
