Andrew Webb reports from the Butchers Arms

Mansfield Town exited the FA Trophy in disappointing fashion as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the Butchers Arms against a determined Droylsden.

Matt Green's late goal was little more than a consolation for the Stags.

On a bitterly cold day in Greater Manchester it was the side from the Blue Square Bet North that started on the front foot.

In the third minute, Danny Gardner was fouled by Marcus Kelly twenty yards from goal, and from the resulting free-kick Danny Rowe fired straight at the Stags wall.

Both keepers also had to cut-out teasing crosses in the opening ten minutes.

Alan Marriott did well to claim a teasing cross from the left by Paul Marshall, whilst at the other end Paul Phillips was called into action when he claimed Richie Sutton's cross from the right.

Rowe then fired straight at Marriott from distance with a speculative snap shot, before the Stags had a chance of their own.

Lee Stevenson's deep cross from the right flank was met perfectly in the area by a goal-bound volley from Matt Green.

Phillips was equal to Green's spectacular attempt but could only parry the ball into the path of Lindon Meikle who fired over from an acute angle.

As the rain began to fall heavily, the Stags succumbed to pressure from the home side and fell a goal behind.

Andy Langford's routine free-kick caused confusion in the Stags defence and Dale Johnson was able to head into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

Three minutes later Rowe fired a free-kick from twenty yards straight at Marriott, before Shaun Holden's low cross from the left nearly ended with Sutton flicking the ball into his own net.

On 32 minutes, Rowe cut inside from the right, beating three Mansfield players in the process, before firing high over the bar.

John Dempster then collected a yellow card for a foul on Johnson, as the home side continued to cause problems.

The Stags survived a series of corners but could have still found themselves further behind by the interval.

Just a minute before the break, Rowe, who had been a constant danger, released an un-marked Gardner on the edge of the area.

Gardner fired straight at Marriott and the Stags keeper then had to be at full-stretch to ensure Rowe's rebound didn't end up in the back of the net.

Mansfield began the second-half brightly, yet despite enjoying plenty of possession inside their opponents half, they failed to force Phillips into a save.

Instead it was the Bloods had the first chance of the half on 52 minutes.

Rowe, on the right side, launched a speculative thirty-yard shot towards goal that Marriott could only parry straight into the path of Steve Hall.

Fortunately for the Stags, Hall lacked accuracy with his follow-up effort and the ball sailed out of the ground.

Five minutes later Aman Verma hit a centrally positioned free-kick the wrong side of Phillips right-hand post, before the Stags were hit by a sucker punch.

Johnson picked up possession of the ball midway inside the Stags half and set about on a piercing run through the defence, which ended with the striker placing the ball past Marriott to double Droylsden's advantage.

Paul Cox then made a double substitution on the hour mark as Luke O'Neil and Louis Briscoe replaced John Thompson and Lee Stevenson respectively.

The changes almost paid dividends straight away.

A long ball over the top from Dempster was received by Green inside the box, but after working himself into space, his shot was tipped wide of the post by Phillips.

Droylsden held firm against a wave of Mansfield pressure over the next 20 minutes, as the Stags searched in vain for a route back into the tie.

The best chance for Mansfield arrived on 81 minutes, when a deep cross through the six-yard box reached Kelly at the back post, but the right-back's effort was hooked off the line by a Droylsden defender.

On 86 minutes, with time desperately running out, a goal finally did arrive, and it was for the Stags.

Adam Murray floated ball into the area from the left side was headed into the back of the net by Green.

Mansfield continued to press forward for what would now be an equaliser, but they continued to be foiled by Phillips.

The Droylsden shot-stopper saved a deflected effort from Meikle in the first minute of additional time and did well to marshal a defence that was tiring by the minute.

Ultimately, despite the tense finale, the Bloods managed to hold on and claim an impressive victory.
