Three goals in 34 minutes were enough to supply newly promoted Fleetwood Town with their first win of the season.
Magno Viera, courted by boss David Holdsworth in the summer, was the star of the show in a match in which the home side took their chances and Stags did not.
Stags had it all to do after a first half described as 'appalling' by David Holdsworth, and despite a greater improvement in the second period, the margin was too great to reduce the deficit.
It could have been a different tale had Stags converted early on as they flew out the traps in blistering fashion.
Fleetwood were given an early scare and were forced to clear off the line after just 30 seconds. Louis Briscoe crossed from the right following good work from Gary Silk, and Adam Smith's header looked to be heading in, but for Paul Linwood's clearance on the goal line.
It was Fleetwood, still on the crest of their promotion wave, who broke the early deadlock. Ian Craney delivered from the right and Wayne Curtis rose unchallenged to head past Alan Marriott.
With 15 minutes played, Briscoe delivered another fine cross, and the onrushing Gary Mills may have been disappointed not to have got a better connection on his header.
The home side doubled their lead on 19 minutes via a sloppy goal. Stags skipper Steve Foster was unable to clear effectively following a chase with Magno Viera, and the ex Ebbsfleet striker sidestepped Alan Marriott to put the ball into an empty goal.
Briscoe swept in again from the right with 28 minutes played. Adam Smith and Paul Connor both connected in the air, and as the ball fell to Keigan Parker inside the area, the former Blackpool hit man failed to get the connection he required to test home goalkeeper Danny Hurst.
At the other end, Wayne Curtis sent a blistering shot just wide of goal, and it was he who acted as architect for Fleetwood's third goal on 34 minutes.
He did all the hard work by winning the ball from Stags' Adam Smith. Then he floated a beautifully-weighted pass to nippy frontman Viera, whose curling finish into the roof of the net from the edge of the box was simply sensational.
Steven Istead replaced Adam Smith at the interval as Stags switched formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Briscoe, Connor and Parker now leading the attack.
Fleetwood's Anthony Barry let fly from 25 yards as Fleetwood continued to revel in the confidence shown from the first half.
Two minutes later, Stags' midfielder Gary Mills unleashed a long range effort which took a wicked deflection and a tip onto the post from the home shot stopper before going out for a corner.
Stags won a spot kick on 54 minutes after Keigan Parker was hauled down in the area after getting past Nathan Pond. But the same man was denied from 12 yards after Hurst got down to his right to hold onto the strike.
Fleetwood, on the search for a fourth goal, won a corner on 65 minutes, but Paul Linwood directed his header wide from the flag kick.
Moments later, striker Luke Medley made his second appearance off the bench in as many games, on for Paul Connor.
Gareth Seddon then curled wide from 20 yards with five minutes remaining as the hosts looked to cap an enjoyable night. But his miss mattered little.
