Stylish Wrexham recorded two victories in succession for the first time this season, as a battling Mansfield Town came away empty handed from the Racecourse Ground.
The Red Dragons are now 11 points off the play offs, but they could be a shrewd bet for a late promotion charge with two games in hand.
Based on the evidence of tonight's contest, it is hard to see why the Welsh side have picked up so few points this term.
Stags, however, will feel desperately unlucky not to come away with a point after commanding most of the second period following an astute tactical change by manager David Holdsworth.
It was Mansfield, sitting 4th in the Blue Square Premier, who started the brighter. They broke well in the early moments and the hosts had targeted Jake Speight, Stags in form striker, as the visitors' dangerman,
Wrexham threatened first after ten minutes when new singing Andy Mangan was unmarked at the back post, but headed wide following a Wes Baynes' corner.
Stags' Ryan Williams, renowned for his attacking abilities, then made a defensive challenge worthy of a seasoned centre half. He timed his tackle perfectly to take the ball away from the advancing Jamie McClusky when he looked to open fire.
Williams then made two telling crosses but no one was on the end to meet them.
It was Baynes, Wrexham's best player, who was denied by the brilliance of goalkeeper Alan Marriott on 23 minutes.
His 25 yard rocket flew over the wall to sting the fingertips of Alan Marriott, who tipped it on to the cross bar.
But Baynes was to find his reward on 29 minutes from the result of a swift breakaway.
He found space on the right, and after latching on to a cross-field pass, Baynes shot low beyond Marriott to break the deadlock.
But Stags' heads failed to drop and they were to find their leveller soon after the break.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Luke Jones found himself in a similar position to the scoring of his fourth goal on Saturday at Forest Green, but after heading goalwards following a Ryan Williams assist, this time his effort sailed wide.
At half time, Stags' chief David Holdsworth swapped Louis Briscoe for Jon Challinor and switched his side's formation from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2, with Duffy and Speight in attack, complimented by Williams and Briscoe on the flanks.
Stags were back on level terms only three minutes into the second half.
Craig Armstrong delivered a powerful long throw from the left and Rob Duffy rose well to flick on to the onrushing Jake Speight, who, at the near post, headed past Sam Russell.
Then Stags broke well after Matt Somer showed his willingness to chase down a loose ball before passing it to Speight. In a fleeting move, Speight sent the ball to Duffy who smashed it goalwards first time when more composure may have been used, in hindsight.
In a bid to pull a goal back, Jamie McClusky smashed a hopeful effort at goal from 30 yards.
But the home side were to regain their lead shortly before the hour. Stags failed to clear a corner and the ball fell invitingly into the path of Andy Mangham who blasted the ball into the net from short range.
Ryan Williams and Luke Foster linked up twice within three minutes via free kicks. Foster tested the 'keeper with his first attempt, but headed wide with the second.
David Holdsworth made a double change in a bid to rescue a point. Ryan Williams, who had taken a knock to the head, came off for Kyle Perry and Michael Brough was replaced by Oliver Hotchkiss in midfield.
Stags' enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the second period and were determined to find an equaliser, which ultimately never came.
They did have a case for a penalty ten minutes from the end, when goalkeeper Russell appeared to make contact with Speight inside the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Stags continued to huff and puff but in the end the points were to stay with Wrexham, who to their credit, showed spells of attractive free flowing football.
The hosts ended with ten men after Christian Smith was shown red for a second yellow card. But Stags can take confidence from a determined performance, which will have pleased the 105 travelling fans.
