Mansfield Town left the Recreation Ground wondering how they didn't gain maximum points, after throwing the kitchen sink at struggling Grays Athletic during an action packed contest.

In total, Stags registered 20 shooting efforts, but somehow the home side held out to earn a smash-and-grab point.

Grays too had chances throughout the game, but Stags should have buried Athletic with the amount of golden opportunities they created.

The hosts had Lee Butcher to thank, who almost single handidly put the point on the board, with an outstanding debut in the Grays goal.

Manager David Holdsworth made four changes from the 11 which drew at home to Kettering on Bank Holiday Monday.

Luke Graham, Jake Speight, Daryl Clare and captain Gary Mills were the fresh names among the starting line up.

It was Jake Speight who had the game's first attempt on goal, shootingon the turn from 20 yards on six minutes.  Moments later, Gary Mills struck straight at home goalkeeper Lee Butcher from a similar distance.

Speight was almost through on nine minutes following Kyle Perry's flick on, but Gavin Hoyte managed to get the deftest of touches to put it behind for a corner.

Stags looked the more dangerous in the opening stages and they found their reward in the opening quarter-hour.

On 12 minutes, Gary Mills swung in a long and deep corner to the far post for Luke Jones who headed back across to the other stick where the diminutive Jake Speight was on hand to head home and claim his fourth goal of the season in the process.

Five minutes later, skipper Mills unleashed a long range drive which goalkeeper Lee Butcher momentarily spilled in mid-air, but claimed at the second attempt.

Forward Jamie Slabber registered Gray's first shot on target on 26 minutes, but Alan Marriott was behind it all the way.

Marriott had to be more alert two minutes later when Glenn Poole struck ferociously from 25 yards, but the Stags' number one made a fine save, diving to his left to palm it away.

Daryl Clare wasn't far off from doubling the lead after 30 minutes. His powerfully-struck left-sided free kick ended just over..

Grays' Poole had a second attempt to test Marriott, but he got it horribly wrong as it fell to him in space just outside of the area.

Jake Speight had a pot-shot moments later as Stags' goal attempts continued to mount.

On 32, Mills took a quick free kick from 25 yards, and Matt Somner tried to pick his spot but it flew well wide.

Stags came agonisingly close to grabbing that elusive second goal ten minutes from half time.  Firstly, Luke Graham laid it off to Rob Duffy who threaded it through to Jake Speight.Speight lost possession butt then managed to regain the ball from inside the area before hitting it narrowly wide.

Town conceded a disappointing equaliser on 36 when Richard Graham's left wing cross found the head of the unmarked James Slabber from short range, and Marriott was rooted to the spot, with no chance of keeping it out.

A minute later, Daryl Clare twisted and turned on the edge of the box before firing just wide.

Slabber was then given a goalscoring opportunity on 41 minutes, when Town failed to pick him up, but this time the ball fell into the grateful arms of Alan Marriott.

Stags raced out of the traps in the second half and almost regained their lead when a bullet-like Luke Jones header was cleared off the line by Kenny Davis following a Gary Mills corner.

On 49, Glenn Poole smashed a piledriver towards goal, and Alan Marriott superbly tipped it over to the scores level.

Daryl Clare had another free kick effort, but the outcome was the same as in the first half.

Mansfield continued to threaten and the home side had the woodwork to thank on 54 minutes.Gary Mills' corner was headed across the face of goal by Luke Jones, and Kyle Perry flung himself at it, but the ball crashed against the bar and Grays were reprieved.

The onslaught continued, as Grays were camped in their half for the remainder of the game.

Another chance came, when Luke Graham cut in from the left to send a well placed cross for Daryl Clare who missed the target from inside a crowded goal area.

Manager David Holdsworth then made a double swap on 63 minutes.Ryan Williams and new signing Blair Sturrock replaced Daryl Clare and Kyle Perry.

Williams slotted into his natural position on the left, with Sturrock joining Duffy in attack.

Within seconds, Williams created an opening. His telling cross created havoc inside the area.Firstly Mills and then Duffy shooting, but both, somehow, were kept out.

On 70 minutes, Rob Duffy rose superbly to flick the ball into the path of Sturrock, but the ex-Swindon hitman didn't get the contact he desired and Grays were let off the hook.

By it continued to be one way traffic in the direction of the home goal. But against the run of play, Daniel Charge's hopeful try was well watched by Alan Marriott.

Stags, creating chance after chance, had another opportunity to take the lead and this one, on 75, was as clear cut as chances come.

Luke Jones came from nowhere to power a six yard header over the target after Ryan Williams' inch perfect cross.

Town made their final change of the contest with ten minutes remaining. The attacking-minded Kyle Nix replaced Matt Somner in midfield.

In the closing moments, the magnificent Williams drifted another sensational cross from the left for the head of Jake Speight, but somehow goalkeeper Lee Butcher kept it out with a truly world class stop.

Gray's Man of the Match Butcher then produced another two unbelievable stops as the drama continued to mount.  Firstly, Mills drifted a beautiful right wing cross for Scott Garner, whose superbly placed header was kept out by Butcher at full stretch.Seconds later, Butcher knocked a Jake Speight effort onto the post as Grays continued to hang by the finest of threads.

The hosts breathed a sigh of relief as the final whistle sounded while Stags huffed and puffed and wondered how the scoreline remained 1-1.
