Stags bowed out of the FA Trophy at the Racecourse Ground ,but there were plenty of positives to take from the match for temporary managerial duo Adie Moses and Mark Stallard.
The pair stamped their mark on team affairs instantly, changing the side's formation from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2. Three changes were made from Tuesday's defeat at Kidderminster Harriers: Matt Somner and Aaron O'Connor were recalled to the line up, And 19 year old James Kay was handed a debut at left back.
It didn't get off to the best of starts for the new managerial duo, however.
Stags looked nervy in the opening 15 minutes and went behind firstly through a Jon Brown strike and then a Ashley Westwood header following a corner.
But Town began to settle soon after and in the end they may well have won the contest after creating a host of goalscoring opportunities.
Their first of which came on 25 minutes - Aaron O'Connor almost connected with a left wing cross, but the ball sailed past him from the edge of the six yard box and went out of play.
O'Connor was unable to make contact with the ball ten minutes from the end of the first half, following a neat through ball by Jonathan D'Laryea, with home goalkeeper Gavin Ward coming quickly off his line to collect.
Wrexham deserved to go into the break with their 2-0 goal advantage, having had the majority of posession and playing the smarter football. But it was Stags who dominated proceedings in the second half.
The impressive James Kay rifled a long range effort goalwards, as did Aaron O'Connor moments earlier, but both went wide.
As Stags began to turn up the heat, Nathan Arnold whipped a dangerous ball into the box from the right, but it eluded the onrushing Stags players inside the area.
But their hard work paid off 20 minutes from the end - Emile Sinclair raced towards the byline and pulled it back for Aaron O'Connor, who tapped the ball over the line from short range to pull a goal back.
After Adnan Ahmed replaced Matt Somner, two good chances were created which could have put Stags on the scoresheet once again.
Aaron O'Connor was clean through on goal, and as the defence appealed for offside, O'Connor broke into the area but his low shot was well saved by Ward, who got down well to make the stop.
Shortly after, Wrexham's Mike Williams struck a post,, but Wrexham then had to withstand heavy pressure.
Ahmed put Sinclair through this time, but his first touch let him down, and then Aaron O'Connor missed from close range after good wok from Sinclair down the right.
Lewis Trimmer came off the bench as Stags changed formation to 4-3-3, and even Alan O'Hare, who performed commandingly at centre-half, could be seen well forward in the closing stages.
But the elusive goal never came and Stags bowed out of the FA Trophy at the hands of Wrexham.
The freedom and new-found confidence which Stags played with was clear for all to see, and Moses and Stallard's start as Stags' caretaker duo will be remembered as a positive one, despite ending in defeat.
