Blue Square Summary | 21st April 2010

Posted on: Wed 21 Apr 2010

Graham Westley's Stevenage side secured promotion to the Football League last weekend with a 2-0 win at Kidderminster.

The newly-crowned Blue Square Premier Champions racked up their 12th victory in 13 games at Aggborough to ensure their long-awaited elevation to League 2 and avoid the lottery of the play offs.

There are still several outstanding issues that are yet to be resolved, however, involving which teams will join us in the top-flight of non-league football in August as this season's fixture list is concluded on Saturday.

Darlington's relegation from the Football League was confirmed a week ago and Grimsby are set to join them if they fail to win against the Quakers this weekend. We know that we can definitely welcome Blue Square South Champions Newport County to Field Mill next season but will have to wait three more days to see who finishes top of the Blue Square North. Southport currently lead the division by one point and will be promoted as Champions if they can better second-placed Fleetwood's result on the day.

Who they replace will also be decided as the relegation battle still rages in the lower reaches of the Blue Square Premier. Bottom-club Grays had their fate confirmed some time ago and Ebbsfleet and Gateshead are in pole-position to join them if they do not climb out of the bottom three by 5pm on Saturday.

It is a five horse race though, with Eastbourne, Forest Green and Histon lying just above them and they will have to avoid being caught if they are to survive. Ebbsfleet face Tamworth and will be hoping to build on last weekend's 2-0 win over Gateshead whilst the Heed will need a positive result at home to Wimbledon after losing both of their last two fixtures. Forest Green travel to Grays after boosting their survival hopes with a 2-0 win over Histon at the New Lawn four days ago whilst the Stutes will be lucky to stay up if they fail to halt a 10-match winless run against Barrow.

Eastbourne have the toughest job to do as they are cushioned from the drop zone by just one point but must face play off contenders Oxford in their game on Saturday afternoon.

Luton look set to finish second after failing to catch Stevenage but can enjoy being bookies' favourites to go up through the play offs after scoring 32 times in their last seven matches. They will be joined by Oxford, Rushden & Diamonds and York, of course, in the fight to go up via Wembley. York's Richard Brodie has rediscovered his scoring touch at just the right time and scored seven times in the Minstermen's last five matches to take his tally this season beyond the 30-goal mark and finish the year as the division's leading marksman.
