Blue Square Summary | 14th April 2010

Posted on: Fri 16 Apr 2010

Stevenage took a huge stride towards promotion to the Football League on Saturday after second-placed Luton could only manage a draw at Tamworth.

Boro's 2-0 win over Forest Green Rovers combined with the Hatters' 1-1 draw at the Lamb gave Stevenage a four point lead at the top going into the last fortnight of the season. Although Luton have since cut the deficit to only a single point following their 6-3 win over Histon last night, Richard Money's men have played two more games than the league-leaders and a win for Stevenage at Altrincham tonight could mean that the title is won by them this Saturday.

Oxford and Rushden & Diamonds both guaranteed themselves a spot in the play offs with wins over the weekend. James Constable scored the only goal of the game to hand the U's a win at Altrincham whilst Aaron O'Connor's double secured a 2-0 win for Justin Edinburgh's men over Ebbsfleet at Nene Park. Neither side could match those results last night though with Oxford drawing 0-0 with Cambridge and Rushden's defeat at Field Mill signalling the end of their 11-match unbeaten run.

York had to wait until last night to secure the final play off berth after losing 3-1 away at Eastbourne on Saturday but then beating Barrow 3-0 at Bootham Crescent last night. That result also lifted Martin Foyle's side up to fourth and above Rushden.

Eastbourne's victory over the Minstermen handed them a massive boost in their bid to avoid relegation as the battle to beat the drop looks set to go down to the final day of the season. The Sports lie just a point above the dotted line after all of the bottom three sides lost by the same margin on Saturday following Grays 2-0 loss at home to Wrexham, Ebbsfleet's defeat to Rushden and Forest Green's loss at Stevenage. Forest Green managed a 1-0 win at home over Crawley last night, however, which currently put's them in the bottom three on goal difference only leaving Gateshead safe and in 20th position by only the slimmest of margins.

Barrow and Histon have a three point cushion and could still be dragged into it after the Stutes extended their winless sequence on nine matches after being beaten 1-0 by Crawley at Bridge Road on Saturday and then losing to Luton last night whilst Barrow could only draw 1-1 at Hayes & Yeading three days ago before losing up at York yesterday.

Salisbury have now guaranteed their safety with consecutive wins at home to Cambridge and then Hayes over the past four days. Tamworth and Hayes lie just below the Whites in 15th and 16th place respectively but only need a couple of points each to guarantee that they will be playing football in the Blue Square Premier next season. With Grays already relegated, the battle to beat the drop looks set to be a six horse race between Ebbsfleet, Forest Green, Gateshead, Eastbourne, Histon and Barrow.

Finally, bottom club Grays finally gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer about last night by picking up their first win since November away at AFC Wimbledon.
