Blue Square Summary | 31st March 2010

Posted on: Wed 31 Mar 2010

Luton picked up six points and scored eight goals this week to go second in the league.

Richard Money's men went goal crazy against Hayes & Yeading last Saturday to keep up the pressure at the top of the division and ensure an intriguing end of season finale. After going 7-0 up by half time, Luton added an eighth in the second half to romp home to a sixth successive win only to follow it up with a seventh last night by beating Salisbury 4-0.

Beleaguered Oxford, who were top of the division by some margin at Christmas, trail Luton in third after beating Gateshead 2-1 at the weekend but losing out 1-0 to Stevenage at Broadhall Way last night. Boro have an eight point advantage over Oxford and a five point cushion over Luton after beating Crawley 3-0 on Saturday and then emerging victorious against Oxford thanks to a Scott Laird penalty early in the second half.

Fourth placed Rushden & Diamonds grabbed up a 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon after Craig Farrell's 55th minute strike before coming out on top in their Northamptonshire derby with Kettering three days later running out comfortable 3-0 winners at Rockingham Road. York occupy fifth position and the final play off berth after drawing 1-1 with Tamworth and then hammering basement club Grays 4-0 yesterday.

Our 2-2 draw with Kettering at the weekend did little for either side's play off hopes but was enough to ensure that we remain in the top eight.

At the other end of the division, Altrincham led Forest Green 3-1 at half time at the New Lawn on Saturday only to be on the receiving end of a second half comeback which saw the Gloucestershire outfit eventually run out 4-3 winners to secure their third consecutive win and temporarily haul themselves out of the bottom three. Their stint on the right side of the dotted line was short lived however, as Eastbourne's 2-1 win over Gateshead last night dumped them back into the relegation quagmire.

Grays can more or less certainly look forward to life in the Blue Square South next season and are now 17 points adrift of safety after losing 3-0 at Cambridge and then 4-0 at home to York during the last few days.

Forest Green and Grays are joined by Ebbsfleet in the bottom three who were not in action this weekend due to the large number of games they have already played.

A hattrick for Cambridge-striker Danny Crow handed his side maximum points against stricken Grays and extended the U's unbeaten run to 10 games whilst taking his season's haul to 20 goals. Cambridge were brought back down to earth last night though after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Kidderminster at Aggborough.

Elsewhere, Salisbury eased their relegation worries with a 1-0 win at Kidderminster on Saturday as did Barrow who beat Eastbourne 3-2 at the weekend and then drew 0-0 with Histon on Monday night.

Our opponents on Saturday Wrexham have taken four points from their last two games after comfortably beating Histon 3-0 at the Racecourse on Saturday and then drawing 2-2 with AFC Wimbledon last night after the Dons twice came back from behind at the Kingsmeadow Stadium.
