Blue Square Summary | 25th March 2010

Posted on: Thu 25 Mar 2010

Seven Blue Square Premier fixtures took place at the weekend and a further eight games midweek, whilst this season's FA Trophy finalists were also decided.

Barrow will take on Stevenage at the home of football after a double from Jason Walker handed the Bluebirds a 2-1 win over Salisbury at Holker Street in their FA Trophy Semi-Final Second Leg on Saturday.

Meanwhile, league-leaders Stevenage booked their place in the Final for the third time in four seasons after securing a 5-1 aggregate win over Kidderminster.

The title-race took another twist this week with free-scoring Luton temporarily managing to break Oxford's grip on second place in the division. A 6-1 away win at Ebbsfleet at the weekend sent the Hatters into the second place and just two points behind Stevenage.

Boro eventually managed to extend this lead to five points after beating Grays 2-1 on Tuesday night whilst Oxford have now gone back up to second on goal difference after securing away draws with Tamworth on Sunday and then Rushden & Diamonds last night. Chris Wilder's men have not now won in five games.

Rushden & Diamonds still occupy fourth spot despite surrendering the lead at Altrincham on Saturday to come away with a 2-2 draw and then taking only a point from last night's clash with Oxford.

Hot on their heels are York who did not play at the weekend due to a waterlogged pitch at Bootham Crescent but won 1-0 away at Kidderminster two days ago to create a five point cushion between them and sixth-placed Kettering.

The Poppies have seen their play-off bid falter this week after losing 2-0 to relegation threatened Forest Green Rovers at Rockingham Road on Saturday.

Our 5-0 thrashing of Histon at the weekend and Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Altrincham, combined with results elsewhere, mean that we currently sit in eighth position and seven points off the play off spots.

At the other end of the division, basement boys Grays look increasingly doomed to playing football in the Blue Square South next season after drawing 2-2 with Eastbourne at the weekend and losing to Stevenage midweek. Julian Dicks' men are a whopping 15 points adrift of safety.

Forest Green are now just two points adrift of safety after recording back to back wins at Kettering on Saturday and then Salisbury three days later.

The third and final spot in the drop zone is currently occupied by Eastbourne who have not won in five games but have two games in hand on Ebbsfleet who are still above them by a single point despite their 6-1 routing by Luton.

Barrow and Gateshead eased their relegation worries on Tuesday night after the Cumbrians beat Wimbledon 2-0 and the Heed took all the points at the Racecourse following their 1-0 win over Wrexham.

Finally, in the week's other games Cambridge United continued their good run of form and have risen to 12th after making it five wins in six games. The U's fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Wrexham on Saturday before beating Tamworth 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium last night.
