Blue Square Summary | 10th February 2010
Although hosting a full programme of fixtures has become something of a rarity in the Blue Square Premier during recent weeks, all 24 of the division's sides were in action last weekend followed by another six games last night.
Oxford were able to wrestle back poll position from Stevenage on Saturday following Boro's 1-0 defeat at Tamworth. A 0-0 draw with Kidderminster at the Kassam Stadium was enough to lift Chris Wilder's men back to the top of the league, albeit on goal difference, after Lambs' skipper Chris Smith's 23rd minute goal inflicted only a third defeat of the season on Stevenage.
Oxford's stay at the top was only brief, however, with the U's 2-1 defeat to Luton and Stevenage's 3-1 win over us (both played last night) conspiring to restore Boro's lead at the top of the table to three points.
Third-placed York resumed normal service at the weekend with a 1-0 away win at Kettering after their run of nine consecutive victories had came to an end at Histon last week following a 1-1 draw. The result was the Minstermen's 17th win of the campaign and took them to within a point of Oxford.
We remained fourth on Saturday night, despite our 2-0 home defeat to Gateshead, but did allow other sides to play catch up. Wimbledon beat Forest Green whilst Rushden and Luton both recorded away wins to close the gap between us and them to just a point and put themselves back in contention for a play off place.
Unfortunately last night's defeat at Broadhall Way, combined with Rushden's 2-0 win over Eastbourne and Luton's 2-1 win over Oxford, dumped us to sixth in the league with both sides leap-frogging us into the play off spots.
At the other end of the table, Gateshead were the only one of the bottom four to register a win on Saturday with Forest Green losing 2-0 at AFC Wimbledon, Grays losing 3-0 to Rushden & Diamonds and bottom club Chester surrendering the lead against Ebbsfleet to lose 2-1 at the Deva Stadium and extend their winless run to 11 matches.
Both Ebbsfleet and Grays were beaten again yesterday following Fleet's 1-0 home defeat to Histon and Grays 4-0 whalloping by Hayes & Yeading.
In the weekend's other games, there was no joy for Cambridge United who lost away at Steve Evan's Crawley 1-0 - last year's play off finalists have now lost all of their last six league matches and dropped to fifteenth. Eastbourne secured a valuable three points against Wrexham to keep themselves above the drop zone. Gary Wilson's side held out fo 35 minutes with 10 men to defeat the Welsh team 2-1.
Wrexham followed up Saturday's defeat with a 0-0 draw against Tamworth last night.
Mid-table Altrincham put five past Salisbury in a drubbing at Moss Lane whilst Histon's Lee Smith scored an equaliser in stoppage time at Bridge Road to earn his side a 3-3 draw with Hayes & Yeading.
A seventh game had been scheduled for last night but Forest Green's home tie with Chester was called off only three hours before kick off after unpaid Chester players refused to board the team bus. With no other option, the troubled Blues informed Forest Green that they could raise a side and would unable to fulfil the fixture. It is believed that another date will be arranged for the game the home side will be seeking compensation for lost revenue.
