Youth team head for cup exit

3 October 2012

Mark Hemingray's youth team were left licking their wounds last night as they crashed out of the FA Youth Cup, receiving an 8-1 thumping at the hands of Lincoln City.

The Stags were without keeper Jordan Fell, who picked up a late injury, and were forced to field defender Kieron Coupe between the sticks.  Competition rules had already ruled first choice shot stopper Ryan Hopkins out due to age restrictions. The hosts began in rampant fashion and led after just 90 seconds when Will Rawdon nipped in at the back post unchallenged to meet Conner Robinson's cross.

Mansfield held off a barrage of Imps attacks but were unable to keep out the hosts who bagged a second on 12 minutes as Jordan Thomas latched onto a central pass to convert beyond the on rushing Coupe. The young Stags makeshift goalkeeper then produced an excellent save on the half hour mark from a looping header, but could do little about Thomas' second goal of the night.

Coupe denied Thomas a treble before the break but was powerless in the second half as the Imps continued to romp, grabbing a fourth through Robinson on 52 minutes before Thomas completed his hat-trick and netted the Imps fifth goal from the penalty spot on the hour mark.

Substitute Remi Davis gave the Imps a scare as he thundered a Liam Marsden cross against the against the bar, however on 69 minutes the impressive Thomas slammed home the hosts sixth of the evening from close range after Coupe had brilliantly denied Robinson. Five minutes later Joe Flint fired underneath the home keeper for 6-1, however Stags' goal was a mere consolation on a terrible night for Hemingray's youngsters as they were to concede twice more before full time.

Matt Bowles made it 7-1 on 78 minutes with a sublime curled effort from 25 yards before, rather fittingly, it was Will Rawdon who wrapped things up right at the death, thundering in a sweet shot with his left boot from the edge of the box.

Line Up: Kieron Coupe, Jordan Jones, Liam Marsden, Jason Gregory (Ben Birch 53), Billy Simpson, Jack Thomas, Matty Jones, Dean Robinson (Lewis Chambers 82), Danny Barke (Remi Davis 53), Joe Flint, Jack Hawkins.
