Young Stags beat Retford

18 September 2014

Development Squad maintain top spot with deserved win over Retford United.

Our Development Squad consolidated their place at the top of the H-K-L North Midlands League with a deserved 3-1 victory over Retford United at the Worksop Van Hire Stadium this evening.

Both team had chances to open the scoring during a tentative first period, which saw Cameron Gray hit the woodwork and the excellent Denham Saxton fire into the side-netting, whilst at the other end, Tom Slone produced a fine last-ditch challenge to keep the Stags on level terms.

After 319 minutes without the Stags conceding, the visitors then broke the deadlock shortly after the re-start when Jack Mawson smashed the ball home from 10 yards out.

However, Retford’s lead didn’t last long as Denham Saxton’s corner towards the near-post was deflected into the net off an opposing defender, with Roome also lurking in close proximity.

The Stags began to turn on the style and reaped the rewards as Rory Thomson showed exceptional vision to thread an exquisite through ball towards Roome, who slotted beyond an advancing ‘keeper.

With the visitors pressing to find an equaliser, our youngsters made the game safe in injury-time as substitute Cameron Dear smashed the ball home from five yards out, following some good work in the air by Roome.

Our Development Squad deserve all the plaudits they will receive for this performance and will now go into next week’s clash with fellow high-flyers Espial FC, full of confidence.
