Trialists in bid to earn deal

3 October 2012

Two trialists are set to fight to earn a contract at the One Call Stadium.

The two players, who have yet to be identified, are expected to feature in tonight’s reserve game at home to Gateshead as manager Paul Cox looks to run the rule over the duo (7pm kick off).

Jason Harrison (Mansfield 103.2) and John Lomas (Chad) are asking the questions

“We had a couple of trialists who played in the Rainworth game, who we’ll have a look at tonight, so there could be something positive which comes from that,” said Paul Cox at his weekly meeting with the local press this morning.

“Me and my staff have done covered a lot of games of late and have looked at a lot of good players, but we have to think carefully about the bodies which might be brought in.

“When you lose Matt Green, Alan Marriott, Gary Roberts and Ross Dyer, these players are hard to replace.

“We’re always looking to get stronger and we need to get better.  We need to improve in certain areas and what we do in certain areas.  For that to happen the squad might need to be strengthened.

“There’s one or two who need a run out (tonight) to blow the cobwebs away.”

Matt Green is also expected to play in tonight’s game at some stage, following his three match suspension.

In team news ahead of our first team game at Cambridge this weekend, Cox looks set to welcome back front man Green, while Adam Murray is a doubt after suffering a bang to his ankle.  Nick Wright (knee) is a doubt whilst Gary Roberts (ankle) and Jamie Hand (knee) will again miss out.

Meanwhile, Paul Cox received positive news earlier today as specialists informed goalkeeper Alan Marriott that he will not require an operation to a shoulder injury, meaning the experienced shot stopper will return to training sooner than anticipated.  The ex-Lincoln ‘keeper is expected to resume training in two months’ time.
