Stags win behind-closed-doors friendly

10 July 2014

Fisher, Palmer, Rhead and a trialist striker score in a 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town.

Our first team kicked off their pre-season campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory away at Huddersfield Town in a behind-closed-doors friendly earlier today.

It was a good day for our frontmen as Alex Fisher opened his account for the club, whilst Ollie Palmer and Matt Rhead were also on the score-sheet along with an un-named trialist striker.

Those trialists who featured in this afternoon’s encounter in West Yorkshire could now participate in Saturday’s match against local rivals Notts County at One Call Stadium.

Player/Assistant Manager Adam Murray, who also played, said afterwards: “It’s the first time we’ve put the lads into a game situation and we wanted to make sure we carried on the work-ethic and the fitness side of things that we’ve been working on in the previous days.

“Only a couple [of trialists played] as we’re obviously looking for specific positions at the minute, but our job is to identify people who fit into those positions and make sure that over the next few weeks we look at people to put the best product out there for the first game of the season.”

He continued: “We had a look at a goalkeeper today and we’ve got a few in line to look at who are highly-rated, but we don’t want to rush into anything because we understand it’s a big position for us and we need someone that’s going to come in and have the authority to lead the back-line.

“The lad was someone we may be able to have on loan from a higher club if we wanted. They’ve been kind enough to let us put him into our structure and way of doing things to see if he fits the bill, but in the coming seven days we’ll also be running our eyes closely over a couple [more goalkeepers] who we think can have a real impact here.”
