Mansfield Town’s One Call Stadium has been affirmed as the oldest professional football ground in the world.
Stags’ boss Adam Murray unveiled a plaque to commemorate the ground’s prestigious status during an interview yesterday morning with Sky Sports News.The club have also placed a large sign across the top of the Quarry Lane Stand to show-off this notable record.
Originally known as Field Mill, the ground has been used as a football ground since 1861 (and as a cricket ground for a few years before that).
The Sandygate Road ground in Sheffield, which was first used in 1860, is the oldest football ground in the world. It is currently used by Hallam FC. Bramall Lane, the current home of Sheffield United, was first used as a football ground in 1862 (though like Field Mill was used as a cricket ground for a few years before that).
One Call Stadium is therefore the oldest football ground in the world that hosts professional football and is also the oldest football ground in the Football League.
After pulling the strings on the ceremonial curtain, manager Adam Murray said to Sky Sports News: “We’re a club that bases itself on a lot of pride. There’s a lot of history to the club and one of my big aims when I took over (as manager) was to bring the community to the club and take the club into the community.”
