Reserves lose at KC Stadium

31 January 2015

Youthful second-string beaten by Premier League academy side.

A youthful Mansfield Town second-string tasted defeat in a Final Third Development League (East Division) encounter at the KC Stadium this afternoon.

The Tigers scored four goals in each half to record an 8-0 victory – thus completing a double over our reserves, having won 2-0 in the reverse fixture last month.

Around 700 fans were in attendance at the KC Stadium and the Tigers made a bright start as they took the lead after four minutes with Matty Dixon tapping home from close-range.

Hull's Johan Ter Horst then went close with a couple of efforts and thought he'd scored on 12 minutes, when he lobbed Stags' 'keeper Sam Wilson, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The Tigers continued to press forward and eventually doubled their lead on 19 minutes, when Max Clark found the target after a well-worked set-piece routine.

Mansfield's players were all at least two or three years younger than their counterparts and as a result, Hull always looked in control of proceedings.

Jonathon Margetts struck to make it 3-0 by the midway point in the first half - the ex-Gainsborough Trinity loanee slotting low into the corner after a pull-back from Clark.

Seven minutes before the break, Margetts doubled his tally as he showed good composure inside the Stags' area to finish under pressure.

The Stags would have been relieved to hear the half-time whistle, such was Hull's dominance, but after the re-start the Tigers showed little mercy as they continued to dictate the contest.

Despite Mansfield keeping things tight at the back for the first quarter of an hour of the second, the Tigers extended their advantage on 61 minutes with Margetts sending Wilson the wrong way with a spot-kick, after being fouled inside the area.

Wilson made several saves to prevent Hull from going further ahead, but the young shot-stopper couldn't prevent Ter Horst from adding a sixth goal on 70 minutes.

Mansfield tired in the closing stages and it was 7-0 to the Tigers on 85 minutes - this time as Greg Luer converted from the penalty spot.

Ter Horst completed the rout in the dying minutes with an intricate lob over Wilson, to give the Tigers a big win and a routine three points.

The Stags' second-string are next in action on Tuesday when they take on Hartlepool United.
