Preview: Mansfield Town vs Newport County

18 August 2014

Everything you need to know ahead of our Sky Bet League Two clash with Newport County at One Call Stadium…

TEAM NEWS

Manager Paul Cox could welcome back burly frontman Matt Rhead for the visit of Newport County.

The 30-year-old has missed the first three matches of the new campaign through suspension, having been red carded in our penultimate match of last term.

The Stags have no newer injury concerns, but will have to do without young full-back Amari’i Bell, who has been recalled by parent club Birmingham City.

RECENT FORM

The Stags go into this match in 13th position in Sky Bet League Two following Saturday’s excellent 2-1 victory over Oxford United at One Call Stadium.

Ryan Tafazolli put us ahead just before half-time, before Danny Hylton’s 79th minute spot-kick looked to have earned the U’s a point. However, skipper Adam Murray came off the bench to smash home a late winner.

Meanwhile, Justin Edinburgh’s Newport are still looking for their first points of the new season and currently occupy 21st position – just above the drop zone.

The Exiles, who lost 2-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers on the opening day, relinquished a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 in their match at Morecambe on Saturday.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Our team registered four points against Justin Edinburgh’s men last season – drawing 1-1 in South Wales in September, before winning 2-1 on home soil in March.

However, the Exiles did the ‘double’ over us en route to winning promotion to the Football League in 2012/13. They won 4-3 in North Nottinghamshire on the opening day and 2-0 at Rodney Parade in February.

OFFICIALS

The Football League have appointed Mr Darren Bond as referee for this match. He will be ably assisted by Mr Matthew Corlett and Mr Stephen Ross. The Fourth Official is Mr Anthony Tankard.
