Goals from Lucas Joao, Jose Semedo, Kieran Lee and Modou Sougou saw the Championship side book their passage into the second round of the Capital One Cup despite Ryan Tafazolli’s consolation goal just before half-time. 

Murray felt that there were positives from the game, however, and accepted that Wednesday were the better side on the night.

"I think [for the] the first 35, 40 minutes, we came here and we were kind of in awe of Hillsborough and Sheffield Wednesday and let them do what they wanted," said Murray.

"Towards the back end of the first half we kicked in a gear and probably should’ve had another goal.

“I think we’ve given away four poor goals. We’ve given away a set piece and a free header in the box.

"Realistically they're four goals that when you come away to a Championship team, you can’t give away.

“It was a tough game like we expected and their quality shone through.”

Although Murray was disappointed with the goals that his side conceded, other parts of the game saw him draw positives. He said: “I thought there were some good performances out there in the second half. We looked to try and play and we created a few chances.

“[In the] second half we actually looked like we wanted to get about them and created a few chances and I was pleased with some of our play. We need to show that endeavour and that work-rate that we did in the second half from minute one.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do but we have a lot of plus points in the team. It’s not very often in our league, with all due respect to it, that we’re going to come up against movement like that [from Wednesday]. Hence whey they're in the Championship and we’re in League Two.”

Murray was obviously disappointed with the result, however he was pleased that the game gave his side “anotherwake-up call” following the Stags’ pre-season campaign.

He said: “It was another wake-up call from the pre-season games. I think it’s important that we didn’t get carried away with pre-season because the rough and tumble of the real stuff is a totally different ball game.”

The gaffer confirmed that striker Matt Green picked up a knock in the build-up to this game but all his focus is now on Friday’s mouth-watering local derby against Notts County.

“It’s going to be a cauldron. I warned the players that if we sit off and go through the motions like we did for 35 minutes here and give Notts County that respect then we’ll get the same outcome.

"So we need to go in to that game fully focussed on three points. We need to take the plus points from Saturday and the plus points from tonight in to Friday night’s game and well be okay.

“We’ll be in tomorrow and we’ll start focussing our energy on Notts County. We already know a bit about them and we need to go there and stamp our authority on the game.”
