Boss happy with the character our team have showed in best month of season so far.
Manager Adam Murray was delighted with the way in which his players applied themselves to earn victory against Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon – and achieve our best points ratio in a month so far this season.
After a forgettable first half, our team opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the second half when Reggie Lambe slotted home from point-blank range, after Junior Brown had seen an initial effort saved.
The Daggers equalised on the hour mark through veteran forward Jamie Cureton, but it wasn’t enough, as in horrible windy conditions, we recorded a win which moves us five points clear of the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone, thanks to a late effort by Brown.
Overall, it means our team have recorded 10 points in February – victories coming today, as well as against Luton Town and Stevenage, whilst a point was earned in a draw with Northampton Town.
“I’m over the moon,” said our boss. “It wasn’t the prettiest of games, the wind was horrendous and ‘killed us’ and we couldn’t get out of our own half in the first half, but we asked for certain ingredients at half-time and we got that.
“It was a very cagey affair. I think everyone in the ground was on edge and that rubbed off on the lads to be honest, but the lads gave me what I asked for and it’s a huge three points for us.”
He continued: “[The early goal in the second half] was just what we needed. I asked for someone to kick-start us, I asked for the first half, the first tackle, the first race, the first pass to be ours and we got the goal that kicked us on.
“If I’m being honest, I thought their goal was superb and a great move. We then had to go again and dig in to win the game, but that’s our best month points-wide this season and it’s a big step for us.
“Looking at the other results, it was a big win for us.”
With six matches left to played at One Call Stadium this term, Murray has re-iterated his call for supporters to back the team as much as possible in order for us to be successful.
Our boss added: “In the last 20 minutes or half-an-hour of a game when the fans get going, they kick in and the drum comes out – the lads were saying [in the dressing room] what a difference it makes to them.
“I know it’s tough for the supporters, because they’re all on edge and anxious, but we need that from the first minute as it’s a major boost for us.”
