More to come from youngsters - Cox

20 August 2013

Paul Cox says there is more to come from his younger players, after seeing two of his young stars write their name in lights.

The impressive Sam Clucas and Saturday's match winner Ollie Palmer, have both won early plaudits amongst the Stags' faithful.

"He's a good player, that's why we signed him," said Cox, when asked about Palmer.  "He is young, and still has a great desire to improve and learn.  It's my job to make sure we're not putting too much pressure on these young players; to make sure they're protected and their education is coming on at the right speed."

"We have people [in the squad] who haven't been playing, like Louis Briscoe and Lindon Meikle, who has been playing excellent of late and was probably unlucky not to be included in the 11 on the Saturday.

"It will come with these younger players, especially those who have made the step up from the Conference to the Football League.  One thing I can say about the boys that have come up with me [from the Conference] is that sometimes it has taken a little time for them to learn, but they have come good.

"As the season unfolds, there will be a number of players who will come into their own," he added.

In other news, the manager has confirmed that ex-Notts County midfielder Hamza Bencherif is still on trial with us and will feature in tomorrow night's reserve game at home to Hull City (7pm) - a game which is free to watch for all supporters.
