Moore on survival targets

18 February 2014

Micky Moore, our first team coach, has set an initial target of 51 points for our team, as we bid to secure our position in Sky Bet League Two

“I don’t think it’s so much that we’ve targeted a certain amount of points, what you look at is history and last year Barnet got relegated with 51 points,” said Moore.

“So what you look at is the teams below us like Northampton, Wycombe and Torquay and ask ‘How many points do they need to get, to get above us?’.

“For arguments sake, if we got 17 or 18 more points that would give us 52 or 53 [points], and you then look at how many points they need to get above you.

“Northampton are on 26 points now, so they’re going to have to get the same amount of points that they have done in a third of the season, than they have done in two-thirds of the season.

“You look at things like that, but the big thing is to win as many games as we possibly can.”

Moore added: “We’ve got 15 games left and we’ve got to get over 50 points and see where that takes us, so you’re looking at getting over 51 points as our target.”

Meanwhile, Moore also insists that our frontmen will be working extremely hard on the training ground over the coming weeks to improve their finishing.

He said: “I don’t think we’ve made any secrets that we’ve been looking to bring in a forward to help the lads we’ve got already, because we need to score goals.

“We’ve probably been guilty in games of not finishing off chances when we’ve had them, so it’s an area that we’ve got to work on this week in terms of trying to get the lads composed in front of goal.

“I think if you look on reflection over the last two or three weeks, we probably would have got more results if we had a natural finisher to [convert] the chances.

When asked what can be done on the training ground to improve our finishing, Moore replied: “We’ve got to just try and re-create [goalscoring] situations and get [players] confident in terms of hitting the back of the net.

“Hopefully, they can then relax on a matchday and take opportunities.”

Our first team coach also confirmed that left-back James Jennings and centre-half Martin Riley are both set to be sidelined for at least three weeks.

“At the moment, you’re probably looking at around three to four weeks for the pair of them,” said Moore.

“Martin might be a little bit before that, but it’s one of those where we leave it in the physio’s hands to try and get them back as quick as they can.”
