Hard work is key for Clucas

29 August 2013

Winger Sam Clucas insists that he will give nothing less than 100% commitment and effort, as he aims to improve his all-round game this season.

The 23-year-old has featured in all five of our competitive matches so far this term, and also wants to emulate last season’s goal-hero, Matt Green.

“I want to be a professional footballer for as long as possible, so if I’m going to play, I don’t care what position it is. I’ll always give 100%,” said Clucas

“I know that I’m not the complete player and I’ve still got to work hard. In every training session, I want to try and improve on my weaknesses.

“The gaffer [Paul Cox] wants me to do what Matt Green did last season, in running behind players, chasing flick-ons and scoring goals.

“I’m learning from the manager, who is showing me different runs that I could make, and I’m enjoying it.

“I’m playing in different positions, and I’m trying to adapt my game to being a striker. Getting game-time will help me to do that.”

Clucas, who hails from Lincoln, scooped the prestigious ‘Player of the Year’ award at Hereford United last season, prior to his summer move to One Call Stadium.

The youngster says that he had no concerns about signing for us when the opportunity arose, and insists that we are a club with a bright future.

“When I came to look around in the summer, I met with the manager and he told me all about the chairman’s plans for the stadium.

“Mansfield Town is a big club. I’ve played here before and enjoyed it, and I know League One or Championship football isn’t too far away from this club in the future.

“We’ve got a lot of things to look forward to during the season. On our day, we think that we can beat anyone.”
