Gaffer discusses ‘keeper speculation

22 June 2015

Boss won’t be rushed in search for right shot-stopper.

Manager Adam Murray insists that he is close to completing a deal to bring a new goalkeeper to One Call Stadium, but admits he won’t be rushed into making any decisions.

Our boss, who was speaking at today’s press meeting, confirmed that he has spoken to a number of targets who could fill the vacant position over the past few weeks, but wants to make sure that he gets the right ‘keeper.

Murray is looking for some vital attributes – experience, know-how and being a commanding presence.

On the search for a goalkeeper, our boss said: “We’ll finally see one walk through the door when I feel that it’s the right person, the right character and the right footballer to wear the jersey.

“It’s [a position] where we’re putting a lot of effort into. We’re speaking to a number of goalkeepers that we feel fit the bill. Obviously, there are names being banded around of who it could be and I’d be lying if I said that we hadn’t spoken to probably all of the names mentioned.

“It’s one where we’re looking for experience, someone who has achieved in their career, someone with a presence – not just out on the pitch, but in the changing room too. It’s an area where we’re looking to bring somebody in who we know we’re going to be able to rely on and have ‘been there and done it’.

“We’re a fairly young team. At the minute I think our average age is around 23 or 24, so you need that rock between the sticks and somebody who demands standards and has been in a winning environment.

“We’re close [to completing the signing], but for me personally, I want to make sure that we’re 100% with this one.”

Reviewing our transfer business so far, Murray continued: “I think up to now we’ve been very shrewd in our dealings. From the outset, as staff we sat down with the board and chairman and we knew what route we wanted to go down. We spoke earlier on in the summer about our recruitment process and we’ve stuck to that.

“We’ve gone out there and got experience, potential and people that know the league and we’ve got a really good balance. As it stands today, I’m ‘over the moon’ with what we’ve got in the building.”
