Manager Paul Cox wants our players to keep their feet firmly on the ground, despite last Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Newport County at One Call Stadium.
Anthony Howell capped off a great week by scoring a last-minute winner which moved us up to 17th position in Sky Bet League Two – eight points above both the relegation zone and the Play-Offs.
Having won three of their last four matches on home soil, our team will be confident going into tomorrow night’s game against a York City outfit, who are in equally as good form.
The Minstermen won 1-0 at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday to register their third consecutive away victory and move to within just four points of seventh-placed Southend United.
With only six points separating no fewer than 14 teams, Cox insists our players’ priority is to win as many matches as possible in order to avoiding being sucked into a relegation battle.
“Our priority is to win as many football matches as we can between now and the end of the season and we’ll see where that leaves us,” stated our boss.
“As soon as you start to get ideas above your station in this league, you get pulled back down very quickly, so the main priority is tomorrow night and trying to get a win against a team in form.”
He continued: “I don’t think anybody is down until it’s mathematically certain and every manager is going to try and instil that mindset into his players.
“There’s a lot of football still to be played yet, but I’m not concerned with what other people do. I can’t control other teams’ results - all I’m interested in is our focus and our mindset.
“In two or three games, the league can change considerably. We got a good win at the weekend – albeit I don’t think we played particularly well, but at this stage [of the season] it’s all about the results.”
Meanwhile, our boss also confirmed that defender Ritchie Sutton is set to have a scan on an injury sustained in the victory over Newport.
“He’s having a scan and we’ll see how that is,” added Cox. “Hopefully the prognosis is that it’s not so bad, but until we get the scan [results], we’re a little bit in the grey about it.”
Both Martin Riley and James Jennings are also in contention for a place in the squad for tomorrow’s match, having trained with the rest of their team-mates earlier today.
