Two ex-Premier League strikers help Huddersfield to 3-1 victory.
Our second-string were consigned to a second defeat inside seven days, as they succumbed to a 3-1 loss against a vastly more experienced Huddersfield Town in the Final Third Development League Cup this afternoon.Jon Stead, who made 86 appearances in the Premier League earlier in his career, got the match-winning goals for the Terriers â scoring twice in relatively quick succession in the second half either side of a splendid 30-yard free-kick into the bottom-right corner by Alex Fisher.
Northern Ireland star Martin Paterson, who himself has top-flight experience from a previous spell at Burnley, also found the target for the hosts â netting the opener midway through the first half, with a close-range finish following a low ball through the six-yard box by Scotland international Paul Dixon.
Other notable players who featured for Huddersfield included Anthony Gerrard, who has 178 second-tier appearances to his name and is the cousin of Liverpool star, Steven, ex-Southampton trainee Oscar Gobern, and exciting midfielder Danny Ward.
By contrast, the Stags sent a youthful squad to West Yorkshire, with two members of our youth set-up â Adam Bishop and Conor Green â both completing a full 90 minutes, whilst Anthony Dwyer and Chris Spencer also featured.
There were two trialists at centre-back for us, whilst others to get a run-out were Liam Marsden, Simon Heslop, Jack Thomas, Reggie Lambe and Ollie Palmer.
First team coach Richard Cooper said afterwards: âHuddersfield put out a very strong team due to them not having a game for a few weeks because of the international break, but I thought we competed very well.â
He added: âYoung [goalkeeper] Adam Bishop made some good saves, but everyone worked hard and it was a good work-out.â
The defeat means we remain bottom in our FTD League Cup group, with matches still to come against Rotherham United and Doncaster Rovers.
Team: Bishop, Marsden, Trialist, Trialist, Green, Heslop, Thomas, Dwyer (Spencer), Lambe, Palmer, Fisher.
