Striker Ross Dyer believes we have been handed a ‘tough’ start to life back in the Football League, following the release of the League Two fixture list at 9.00am today.
Our team travel to Scunthorpe United on the opening day of the new campaign, before Exeter City visit One Call Stadium on Saturday 10 August for our first League Two encounter on home soil.
A visit to Wycombe Wanderers soon follows, but the highlight of August will undoubtedly be when we host mighty Portsmouth, who were FA Cup winners in 2008.
“It’s going to be a tough start,” stated Dyer.
“Scunthorpe are a good team and it won’t be easy going there on the opening day.
“It’s also nice to play a big team like Portsmouth so early in the season, and I think we’re going to learn a lot about the division in the first few games.”
Two matches that many fans will have already pencilled in their diaries are those against Chesterfield; the first of which takes place at the Proact Stadium on Saturday 28 September.
Our home meeting with the Spireites is on Saturday 22 March.
Dyer added: “During my career I don’t think I’ve ever played in any feisty local derbies. I’ve heard a lot about this rivalry, so to play in it will be a very special experience.”
The 25-year-old missed most of last season’s Conference Premier title-winning campaign due to injury, but scored nine goals from 47 appearances during the 2011/12 season.
Winger Louis Briscoe, meanwhile, echoed Dyer’s sentiments and highlighted our fixtures against Burton Albion as two matches that he is particularly looking forward to.
Briscoe said: “I'm from Burton and as a kid I used to sell programmes, work on the turnstiles and generally help out there, so it’ll be a nice experience going back.
“There’s going to be no easy games in League Two, but these are exciting times for us.”
