Development Squad put five past Matlock Town

26 August 2014

Stags produce a five star display to sink Matlock Town in H-K-L North Midlands League.

Our Development Squad produced a slick performance as they ruthlessly ripped apart Matlock Town to record an emphatic 5-0 victory.

Skipper Joe Fitzpatrick led the way by opening the scoring with an emphatic 25-yard thunderbolt, which gave the Matlock ‘keeper no chance.

George Holloway showed excellent composure to add a second goal just a few minutes later when he latched onto Luke Thomas’ defence-splitting pass and stabbed the ball beyond an advancing ‘keeper.

The Stags should have scored again before the half-hour mark when Fitzpatrick had an effort smothered by the ‘keeper amidst a frantic goalmouth scramble, before Tino Chavandura was off-target with the rebound.

However, it wasn’t long until Mansfield struck again. Rory Thomson was the provider on this occasion, bamboozling his marker with some tricky footwork out on the right flank, before delivering an inch-perfect cross for Thomas to head home.

The Stags continued to attack with menace after the re-start and a fourth goal arrived when substitute Ollie Roome peeled off the shoulder of his marker to head home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Defender Elliot Holmes then completed the rout with 10 minutes remaining when he rose high and unopposed in the six-yard box and crashed a bullet-header beyond the home ‘keeper.

It was an excellent night for our team with five different players on the score-sheet, the excellent Thomson claiming a hat-trick of assists, and goalkeeper Jahquil Kumari-Hill keeping a clean-sheet.

Youth Development Manager Darren Kelk said afterwards: “I was really pleased with the performance. I can’t single any one player out, because the whole squad went about their business well.

“I think the two early goals knocked the stuffing out of Matlock and it was a really pleasing night for us.”
