Dempster’s delight at young guns’ win over Wolves

1 August 2015

Young Stags impress in victory over Category One outfit.

Our youth team produced arguably their best performance of pre-season as they saw off a Category One Wolverhampton Wanderers side, to record a 2-1 victory.

The Stags, playing for the third time in three days after games against Shirebrook Town and Peterborough United, showed no signs of fatigue and recorded a morale boosting win courtesy of goals from Zayn Hakeem and defender Morgan Ratcliffe (pictured).

Speaking afterwards, youth boss John Dempster expressed his delight at the encouraging performance and result.

“Today was a tough test against a Category One academy outfit with a proven track record of producing quality footballers,” said Dempster.

“All of our lads were a credit to our football club and they’re starting to come out of their shells and bond with each other.”

He continued: “Sam Wilson, our ‘keeper, pulled off a couple of top notch saves and we won the game courtesy of a set-piece move that we’ve worked on at the training ground, which is pleasing. Joel [McLean] provided a great delivery and it was a perfect header to match from Moragn [Ratcliffe].

“We’ve got many things to work and improve on, but the lads deserve some praise for this result.”

Our youth team will be hoping to produce a similar performance and result when they open their Football League Youth Alliance campaign with a home match against Lincoln City next Saturday (08 August).
