Cox's striker search continues

17 July 2013

Manager Paul Cox has revealed that a potential deal to sign a League One striker has fallen through, but insists he has other targets on his radar.

Our boss met with the un-named striker earlier this week to discuss personal terms, but was unable to agree a deal to bring the player to One Call Stadium.

“Things haven’t worked out during the discussions and I feel as if I’ve been messed around a little bit,” said Cox, who was speaking after our win over Peterborough United.

“We put a fair offer in to the club, which was accepted, and made a fair offer to the player, but the goal posts have been moved.

“I’m not prepared to risk bankrupting this club for the sake of one player, or having someone come in, which leads to disharmony in our dressing room.

“The deal isn’t dead, but I won’t be held to ransom by anybody. We have other targets and we will at some point bring somebody in – it may even be two players.

“Whoever we do bring in, he’ll fit our criteria, he’ll be hard-working and he’ll fit in with the players, who are already in our dressing room.”

Meanwhile, Cox was pleased with our performance in tonight’s win over The Posh.

He added: “It was a half-decent performance. In pre-season, results don't matter too much, but the boys are working hard and we're getting some good work-out against good opposition."

More reaction will follow on StagsPlayer later tonight.
