Cox: We deserved victory

17 August 2013

Manager Paul Cox was delighted with our team’s performance in our 1-0 away victory at Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon.

Substitute Ollie Palmer netted a late winner, which earned us a much-deserved first win in League Two this season.

“We deserved the victory. We created a number of chances and were unlucky not to have won by a bigger margin,” said Cox.

“This isn’t an easy place to come to and get a result, because Wycombe are a good side, so I’m very pleased that we won.

“We needed the result to give us a bit of belief. We’ve set the standard here today now, and the task is for us to maintain that.”

Palmer had only been on the pitch for 10 minutes when he reacted quickest to tap home from close-range, after Martin Riley’s header ricocheted off the post.

It was the first goal in Mansfield Town colours for the former Havant & Waterlooville man, and also his first strike in the Football League.

Cox added: “I don’t want to put too much pressure on the kid [Palmer]. He’s still got a lot to learn, but if he continues his learning curve, then he’ll have a very good future.”
