Cox: We deserved to win

14 December 2013

Manager Paul Cox believes we were very unfortunate not to take all three points from our Sky Bet League Two clash with AFC Wimbledon this afternoon.

Our side brought an end to their six-match losing streak with a much-deserved point, but could have taken all three had they not been denied by the brilliance of Dons shot-stopper Ross Worner.

Worner made a string of incredible saves as we pressed forward in the closing stages and had twice kept out Matt Rhead headers, before he did likewise from a Ross Dyer effort.

Reflecting on the match, and Worner's heroics, our boss said: "It's incredible and I don't know how they've not hit the target.

"Three of them were world-class saves and I feel gutted for the boys, because we weathered the storm in the first half, playing against a strong wind and limited them to one chance.

"Apart from that they only had long-range efforts and in the second half, I thought there was only ever one team that was going to win it [us]."

Cox continued: "I don't think any of our players did anything wrong with their headers, he keeper has just had one of those days.

"I thought all three [were going in] and I don't know how he's kept some of them out - especially the one at the end where Ross Dyer has ghosted in at the far-post, headed it as if it's going to go in the top corner, but somehow [the keeper] has got across and tipped it over the crossbar."

"So credit to the keeper, I thought he was outstanding, but it's frustrating because we've came here and our shape has looked good and we looked organised."

Nevertheless, Cox believes there are many positives that can be carried forward into Tuesday's night's eagerly-anticipated FA Cup with Budweiser Second Round replay with Oldham Athletic at One Call Stadium.

He added: "The boys are working hard and have come away to two tough places [AFC Wimbledon and Oldham Athletic] and have had chances to win both games."
