Cox: Standards need to be raised

6 August 2013

Manager Paul Cox has called on his players to ‘raise their standards’ after our 2-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers in the Capital One Cup tonight.

Goals prior to half-time by Andy Robinson and Chris Atkinson sealed a comfortable win for the hosts, as we endured a frustrating night at Prenton Park.

“There were a few home truths told in the dressing room as we can’t start a match and give a team a 2-0 lead,” said Cox.

“Both goals that we conceded were really sloppy and the application, hunger and desire wasn’t there, and we’ve let ourselves down.

“We aren’t going to win many matches if we play like how we did tonight.”

“On the positive side, I thought that both Ollie Palmer and Sam Clucas were a handful throughout the game. Ritchie Sutton was also immaculate when he came on.”

Cox added: “Some people might say that I’m being a bit harsh, but we’ve lost two football matches now and it’s time that we ‘get real’.

“What we achieved last season is history, and I’m only bothered about the future. I want standards to be raised again.”
