Cox: Our performance was poor

2 November 2013

Manager Paul Cox was disappointed with our team’s performance in the 3-0 loss to Southend United at Roots Hall tonight.

The Shrimpers took the lead midway through the first period when Antony Straker converted a right-wing cross by Kevan Hurst.

Jamie McGuire’s unfortunate own goal just before the break put the hosts in further control, before Hurst struck a third deep into stoppage-time.

It compounded a miserable night for our side, who finished the match with nine men, as both James Alabi and Lee Beevers were sent-off.

“From start to finish we were poor,” said our boss.

“I think we played poorly tonight, so that’s not a good thing to happen. I’m never going to be happy after losing the way we did.

“We had a few half chances second-half, but it never looked as though we were going to score a goal if I’m going to be honest.

“(Sam) Clucas and Lindon (Meikle) improved things, but not too much. There wasn’t too much improvement in the second-half display.”

On the dismissal of debutant Alabi, Cox added: I thought it was harsh, but I’m not going to comment until I’ve seen the incident on DVD.”

Our side are next in action on Saturday 09 November, when we face St Albans City in the First Round of the FA Cup with Budweiser.
