Blair joins on free transfer

13 January 2015

Winger arrives at One Call Stadium on a deal until end of the season.

Manager Adam Murray has fought off competition from several clubs to capture the signature of highly-rated winger Matty Blair on a permanent deal until the end of the season.

The transfer will be complete subject to approval from the Football League and Football Association.

The 25-year-old links up with the squad immediately and will be eligible to feature in Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two home match against Exeter City.

Blair, who has been on loan at Cambridge United this term – playing against us twice in the FA Cup, will be mainly remembered by Stags supporters for scoring York City’s winning goal in our Conference Premier play-off semi-final defeat to the Minstermen in May 2012.

Also an FA Trophy winner during his time at Bootham Crescent, the winger joined Fleetwood, his old club, on a free transfer ahead of the 2013/14 campaign and made an immediate impact – featuring on 33 occasions as the Cod Army won promotion to Sky Bet League One, via the play-offs.

Speaking shortly after putting pen-to-paper on his deal with us, Blair said: “Mansfield have been interested [in me] for a while and I've been attracted in signing for Mansfield for a while.

"I've seen how Adam [Murray, the manager] has developed the squad and I've been enthused by the way he talks about the club."

Boss Adam Murray said: "Matty's been on the radar for a while. He's quick, direct, and changes games and makes things happen.  Matty is multi-functional. He can play on either wing, up top, or in the 'number ten' role. He offers a lot to us and he's another top quality signing for us and a great person."
