Baxendale praises team performance in win over Stevenage

9 January 2016

New signing James Baxendale said he wants more of the same for the rest of his spell at One Call Stadium after scoring a superb second goal in this afternoon’s 2-1 win over Stevenage.

The attacking midfielder, whose arrival from Walsall was announced before kick-off, scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the Stags’ victory over Stevenage and was full of praise for his new team mates.

“It was a great touch from Greeny (Matt Green) to set me up for the goal. When you’re playing with players like that, it makes it a lot easier.

“The front four rotated well and obviously backed up by everyone else, I thought it was a good display.

“We had to get a grip into the game and I think we got a foothold and played some decent stuff [in the] first half and obviously [in the] second half [we] continued that.”

Baxendale has made over 100 senior appearances in his short career so far and has also scored some good goals along the way, something which Stags’ fans saw first-hand today.

“I’ve scored a few from outside the box and it’s something I want to get back to, so to do it on the first game is somewhere to start and something I want to continue.

“I’ll keep trying, so whether they go in or not is a different thing, but I’ll keep getting in there and I’ll keep trying.

“Looking at the table before the game, I really wanted to kick on to get the three points. Obviously to finish off with a goal for myself, it couldn’t have gone much better really.”
