Youth preview: Shrewsbury Town vs Stags

7 September 2016

Stags' under 18s will make the trip to Shropshire to face Shrewsbury Town in their second group stage game of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday (12pm kick-off).

John Dempster's side triumphed 2-1 in their first group stage game against Burton Albion at the end of August, thanks to goals from winger Tom Marriott and striker Ashanti Pryce.

The young Stags then followed up the cup victory with a 6-0 hammering of the Brewers in their EFL Youth Alliance league fixture last week, which head coach Dempster said epitomised his players' work-rate.

Our under 18s raced in to a 3-0 lead inside 11 minutes as goals from midfielder Alistair Smith, striker Zayn Hakeem and centre-half Kieran Harrison stunned the Brewers early in the game. Winger Tom Marriott then all-but wrapped up the victory when he converted an indirect free-kick after 17 minutes, before late goals from substitutes Ashanti Pryce and Devante Reittie rounded off the emphatic scoreline.

The Shrews have had a disappointing opening month to the season which has included two draws and two defeats from their opening four fixtures in the EFL Youth Alliance North West division.

Sandwiched between those two draws, against Rochdale and Burnley respectively, was a 2-2 stalemate against Walsall in their opening EFLYA Cup tie.

The draw against the Saddlers means Stags top the group after one round of games, and Saturday's match presents them with a fantastic chance to widen the gap between themselves and their group stage opponents.

The match will kick-off at 12pm on Saturday 10 September and the address is as follows:

Shrewsbury Sports Village and Indoor Bowls Centre
Sundorne Road,
Sundorne,
Shrewsbury,
Shropshire,
SY1 4RQ

Supporters are welcome to attend the cup tie and entry is free for all.
