Late winner shows high team spirit, claims defender

27 August 2016

Defender Krystian Pearce says another late winner from Mansfield Town underlines the Stags’ team-spirit and never-say-day approach.

For the second time this season, Stags secured maximum points with a winner in the closing stages.

Midfielder Kevan Hurst fired Stags’ to a stoppage time win at Newport on the opening day of the season and hitman Matt Green followed it today with an 89th minute decider as Stags beat Leyton Orient 2-1 at the Matchroom Stadium.

Praising his team mates attitude, Pearce said after today’s victory: “It [the last-gasp goal] shows great character from the lads. Everyone stuck together to grind out a great three points.

“The boys stood up well to it [the Orient test] and our spirit saw us through.

“To score them [last minute winners] both away from home shows our team spirit. Hopefully we can take that team spirit into the rest of the season and get some more points on the board.”

Pearce was a real threat from corners throughout the afternoon and had chances to carve his name onto the scorecard in his first game of the season.

“I’m a bit disappointed not to get on the scoresheet. Maybe my timing was a bit off but we got the three points and that’s all that matters.”

Asked about his return to the side following injury, Pearce said: “I made it through, I didn’t pass out so I’m happy! I’m buzzing to make 90 minutes and get the three points to go with it."

A jubilant but well-balanced Pearce added: “It’s [the good results] only a start so we have to keep our heads level and kick-on."

The defender will be aiming to keep his place in the line-up on Tuesday night as the Stags take on Doncaster Rovers at home in the Checkatrade Trophy group stages.
