Forward excited at prospect of ‘big weekend’

26 March 2024

Forward Will Swan has described Stags’ Easter ‘big weekend’ as ‘important’ as Mansfield prepare to take on Wrexham and Accrington Stanley in the space of four days.

As the race for promotion hots up, Swan – and the rest of the squad – are aware of the opportunity that positive results will have on Stags’ season with seven matches left to play.

The in-form striker has highlighted the importance of Friday’s trip to third placed Wrexham, live on Sky Sports (3pm kick-off).

Speaking to iFollow Stags in a news conference at RH Academy, Swan said: “It’s an important one and a big weekend.

“Every game at this stage of the season is important – we’re not going to treat it any differently.

“We’re going to go there with the objective of getting three points.

“The big games are always enjoyable to play in – the ones that are on Sky as well.

“There’s a lot of people going to be watching. We’re going to treat it like any other game this season.”

The former Nottingham Forest frontman has netted seven goals in his last nine matches – showcasing himself as one of the division’s most potent goalscorers in recent months.

“I seem to have found a bit of form at the start of this year, thankfully,” he said.

“I’m just happy that I’m back getting more game time and helping the team out in any way that I can.

“I think that first goal against Wimbledon – I think that was the first one this year – getting a run of games after that has boosted my confidence and I’m starting to find the net again.”

The 23-year-old went on: “Getting more time on the pitch has allowed me to get more chances.

“The more chances you get, the easier it is to score goals.

“Maybe the first one against Harrogate is my favourite one. That gave me a lot of confidence scoring from outside the box and then getting a second one as well.

“I’m used to scoring one goal but I’ve not had an awful lot of braces so that was a nice feeling.

“[I’m] Walking on to the pitch with more confidence.

“When you’re not scoring it feels like you’re not going to.

“When you get a run of one, two or three goals it feels like whenever you play, you’re going to score.”

Heading into the final seven games, he said: “It’s coming to the end of the season where every game is crucial,” said Swan.

“It’s really good that I have managed to start scoring at this time of the season.

“Nobody is getting ahead of themselves; we’re just taking it one game at a time.”
