Youth preview: Stags v Burton

24 April 2024

Mansfield Town under-18s host Burton Albion on Friday in a Youth Alliance Merit League fixture at One Call Stadium (11am kick-off).

Supporters can attend the contest for FREE via the Sandy’s Bar & Kitchen entrance in the Ian Greaves Stand at the ground.

Stags have won their last two matches. Saturday 13 April’s 2-1 victory against Rotherham was followed up by a dominant 3-0 win over Bradford City yesterday (Tuesday), as Mansfield maintained a 100% start to their Merit League matches.

On his side’s superb form, professional development phase lead coach Steve Chettle said: “It’s two from two in the Merit League.

“It was a tough game against Rotherham – a really physical group – but we battled well against them in that game and played some really good football in long spells.

“Yesterday, we played at One Call Stadium – it was great for the kids to play there, and it was a really commanding 3-0 performance. It could have been more and should have been more but two wins from two is a good start from us.”

On Friday’s opponents, Burton, Steve said: “The last time we played them they beat us.

“We beat them at the start of the season.

“They beat us in the last game of the regular season and they’re also in the pack to challenge for the top of the league as well.

“It’s going to be a huge game for us but we’re coming off the back of a great result and we’re playing at One Call Stadium again which should spur us on to make another good performance.”

The coach went on to praise defender Lewis Warnaby (Academy Director’s Player of the Season) and midfielder Ronnie Kokkinos (Academy Player of the Season). The pair were presented with their trophies at Sunday evening’s Annual Awards Dinner at One Call Stadium.

“They [the awards] were really well deserved,” he said.

“Lewis has been fantastic this year.

“A lot of his performances go unnoticed because he’s a centre-back and we’ve kept a lot of clean sheets through Lewis’ desire and wanting to defend in the first place.

“That is thoroughly deserved for Steve Hymas’ award as Academy Director’s Player of the Season.

“Ronnie has been fantastic all season, he’s scored some really good goals, assisted some really good goals and his performances all round have been super.

“He’s trained with the first team a couple of times and hopefully next year he’ll get the opportunity to do that a little bit more.

“Both awards are deserved for the boys.”

Supporters can attend Friday’s match for FREE at the Sandy’s Bar & Kitchen entrance of One Call Stadium: Quarry Lane, Mansfield, NG18 5DA
